Sustainable design

Sustainability that starts with the drawing.

The most effective sustainable decisions are made early and cost very little: where the building sits, how it meets the sun, how air moves through it and what it is made of. That is where our approach begins.

Our approach

Climate-responsive by design.

Central India has hot, dry summers, a heavy monsoon and mild winters. Buildings designed with that rhythm in mind are more comfortable and use less energy, before any equipment is added.

01

Orientation and daylight

Buildings are oriented and openings sized for the sun path, so rooms are bright without excessive heat gain.

02

Shade and passive cooling

Deep overhangs, louvres, courtyards and cross ventilation reduce the need for mechanical cooling.

03

Thermal mass and materials

Locally suited materials with good thermal performance help keep interiors stable through the day.

04

Water and landscape

Drainage, rainwater considerations and planting are designed with the monsoon, not against it.

05

Efficient planning

Compact, well-organised plans reduce built area, material use and running costs.

06

Durability

Robust details and finishes chosen to age well and be easy to maintain over decades.

An honest note

Practical, not performative.

We prefer measures that make a real difference to comfort and running costs over features added for show. The right approach depends on each project’s brief, site and budget, and we discuss it openly from the first meeting.

Where a client wishes to pursue specific energy targets or certifications, we discuss the requirements and the specialist input they need at the start, so that they are designed in rather than added on.

Next step

Design a building that works with its climate.
